About Transport 2030

Transport 2030 is a foresight project focusing on the transport system for goods and people and its infrastructure with a perspective up to the year 2030. The purpose of the project is to bring about practical collaboration to address the long-term development and changes that are needed.

The goal is to build a platform for dialogue in Sweden and from this platform to develop a long-term vision and concrete proposals for improvements to the transport system. These improvements may relate to the physical infrastructure as well as the laws, regulations and commercial aspects that affect development and use. Although the primary target group is politicians, it is also aimed at public and private sector transport sellers and buyers, as well as transport researchers and transport authorities. Through the EU and the increasing number of common guidelines, Europe is becoming an ever more important arena.

If Sweden is to have a greater impact on EU work relating to transport issues, we need to coordinate our efforts. Today this means that Sweden, in order to be competitive, needs to increase its active participation in European development projects and standardization initiatives. To participate in international research projects, Sweden needs a high level of excellence and expertise that has something to contribute. Sweden also needs to show more interest in the early stages in order to impact the way in which EU research programmes are formulated so they can benefit Sweden.

Transport 2030 could be an important foundation for a national strategy for renewal of the transport system in a strong innovative climate. The goal of such a strategy should be for all of the relevant parties to collaborate effectively to achieve visible changes in the transport system, including greater efficiency and increased safety and security for both goods and people, while at the same time reducing environmental impact.

Examples of questions that the comprehensive transport foresight project will shed light on are:

  • What will our transport needs be in 20 years and what challenges can we predict?
  • How can we create a competitive transport system that is also sustainable in the long term?
  • How can future transport safety and security be improved?
  • What is the effect of the development of telematics and other transport-related technology?
  • How can the transport system of the future be financed?
  • How can we improve transport efficiency (e.g. IT, logistics etc.)?
  • How is the transport system being affected by globalisation and international regulation and standards?

The project involves broad-based collaboration between the Swedish Rail Administration, the Swedish Road Administration, the Swedish Civil Aviation Administration, the Swedish Maritime Administration, VINNOVA (Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems) and the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA). Companies and researchers will also take part. Transport 2030 will continue for a period of 1.5 to 2 years and IVA will be the project platform.
