Purpose and goals
The purpose of the Transport 2030 project is to bring about broad-based collaboration focusing on long-term development of the entire transport system. This will be achieved by analysing who needs to do what in order for Sweden’s transport system to make a greater contribution to the positive development of society, improve competitiveness in industry and make it easier for people to travel in larger regions.
How can infrastructure development in Sweden be coordinated so that it can meet the transport needs of people and goods more effectively than it does today? It is also very important to identify measures that can be implemented to make the transport system safer and more effective and to minimise environmental impact. The motor vehicle industry is a significant sector in Sweden which, if sound research continues to be supported, can develop as an essential export industry. The project will also help to secure a leading position for Sweden in transport research.
The Transport 2030 project is intended to contribute to positive development within the transport sector by creating a vision for the Swedish transport system in 2030 and by providing concrete proposals for how this vision can be realised. The goal is to build a platform for dialogue in Sweden and, from this platform, develop a long-term vision for the future and also provide concrete proposals for improvements and development needs within the transport system. The result should be presented in connection with the ITS World Congress in Stockholm in September 2009 and should be used as background for the infrastructure bill expected in 2012.
An important point of departure for the vision and the proposals delivered by the project consists of a positive view of industrial development, a dynamic industry and a mobile society. Other points of departure could result in different proposals. The results of the Transport 2030 project can in that sense be viewed as input offered jointly by many parties in the discussion about how we are shaping our society.
The Swedish transport system is an integrated part of an international transport system. Measures implemented in Sweden must therefore be implemented in an international and particularly a European context. It is therefore important to influence international development as well. In order for the project to have the potential to impact international development, the report results are being documented primarily in English.
