English Summary

Sweden needs to secure its energy supply on competitive terms for industry, while at the same time reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

This is a challenging vision, but Sweden, with its climate-friendly electricity production and energy-efficient industry, is in a good position from which to proceed.

The most important climate goal is to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Improving energy efficiency and renewable energy are two important means of achieving this goal according to the EU’s so-called 20-20 20 objective.

Politicians need to invest in measures that provide the most climate benefits for the money. The most cost-effective method is putting a market price on emissions through so-called market-based mechanisms.

The report presents the five areas – or directions – that are considered the most important at this energy crossroads. They are energy efficiency, measures beneficial to the climate, electric vehicles, nuclear power and preparing for a warmer climate.
