The forest, which accounts for around 35 percent of Sweden’s net exports, has a big influence on jobs, prosperity and the climate. But forest industry profitability has been declining for a long time. Not enough energy has gone into developing new, innovative products because the forest industry allocates the equivalent of less than 1 percent of its net sales to R&D.
The Swedish forest industry faces significant, long-term challenges and to meet them, a transformation is needed towards new products and services further along the value chain and in new value chains. There is great growth potential in investing in advanced and developed products and product segments.
Increasing the industry’s profitability and competiveness is crucial for growth, job creation and to promote a sustainable bioeconomy. The forest can have a key role to play in solving the climate issue.
