Established in 1958, China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) is the largest national non-governmental organization of scientific and technological workers in China. Over the years, CAST has developed into a federation of 210 national-level learned societies, plus over 3100 branches at the provincial, municipal and county level and nearly 150,000 grassroots organizations (branches in towns, enterprises, neighborhood communities and universities, as well as associations for applied technology in rural areas), serving more than 91 million scientific workers all over China. As the bridge linking the Chinese science and technology community with the Chinese government, CAST is a constituent member of the country’s top political advisory body -- the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).
CAST maintains cooperative relations with scientific and technological organizations of more than 30 countries. Representing the science and technology community of China, CAST and its member societies have joined over 360 international scientific organizations, such as ICSU, WFEO, etc.
