Vision Reports

One of the core pillars of the work within Swedish Futures will result in a number of overarching vision reports, in which we will present shared views of megatrends and challenges, but above all formulate shared goals and directions for Sweden in key areas.

Through shared visions, we aim to build engagement and a common understanding of the needs, opportunities and challenges required to ensure Sweden remains competitive, sustainable and secure in the long term. Would you like to know more or contribute to the work? Contact me!

Three interlinked components of the work

  1. Knowledge gathering – through "future sprints" in specific technology areas
  2. Synthesis – in broad issues such as sustainability, the economy, geopolitics, access to capital and competence
  3. Scenarios and visions – a consolidated strategy and future outlook with action plans

The basic premise is that the work will be conducted through an iterative process that engages and mobilises a wide range of actors and areas of expertise. IVA's broad network - including IVA Fellows, the Business Executives Councils, the CTO network and the Student Council - will all be involved.

Initially, we are working with various scenario techniques to outline possible development pathways within different technology areas. These will then be used as a basis for identifying synergies between the areas, key external factors and critical conditions for favourable progress, which together will form an overarching vision for Sweden

The work will result in the continuous publication of 3–4 vision reports, in which discussions, activities and analyses are synthesised into shared perspectives on megatrends, challenges, objectives and visions for Sweden as a leading technology and innovation nation.

Technology talk #1människor i Wallenbergsalen på IVA

How does Sweden ensure long-term competitiveness and resilience in a time of geopolitical uncertainty and rapid technological transition? Based on IVA's report on Sweden's position in 48 strategically important technologies, we gathered more than 100 researchers, industry leaders and decision-makers in December (2025) for an in-depth conversation about which technology areas require particularly clear strategic choices. The focus was on three areas of crucial importance for Sweden's future prosperity, security and innovation capacity:

  • Semiconductors – a fundamental enabler for digital infrastructure, defence, AI and industrial competitiveness.
  • Production technology – where electrification, automation and circularity are changing the conditions for industrial production.
  • Advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) – a rapidly growing area with great potential for both patient benefit and industrial development.

We got to share perspectives from Michael Peeters (IMEC) on Europe's role in the global semiconductor race, Jean-Luc di Paola-Galloni (Valeo Group) on the future of sustainable production, and leading Swedish researchers in ATMP and the T-cell field, among others.

Overall, the discussions point to a clear need for:

  • more and better co-operation with the EU and, in particular, the other Nordic countries
  • long-term and predictable frameworks for investment and skills.
