The history of IVA

Sweden’s second youngest Royal Academy, the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA), was founded as recently as 1919, but is nevertheless the world’s oldest engineering academy.

IVA arranges seminars and other events, which in most cases are free of charge and open to everyone. In many cases, you can choose to participate on site or remotely via streaming - live or afterwards. Most events are held in Swedish.

Joakim Nivre granted the Chester Carlson Research Award

Professor Joakim Nivre has been granted the Chester Carlson Research Award of 100,000 SEK for his innovative contributions to computational linguistics, his leadership in the research community, and his commitment to language technology through collaboration. The award has been granted since 1985 to promote scientific research in the field of information science.

How are Swedish companies coping with record inflation and war?

The world is in a turbulent economic situation. In Sweden, inflation is at its highest in over 30 years. Central banks are raising their interest rates, while war and conflicts are interrupting the supply of critical input goods for industry. We are in a situation that may affect Swedish companies in many ways for a long time to come, says Annika Winsth, Chief Economist at Nordea and Fellow of IVA.

"Sweden and the EU need to invest more in AI"

In order for Sweden to be able to maintain its competitiveness in the future, we need to invest more in AI development and innovation. This insight was reinforced for IVA's Chair Marcus Wallenberg, who led IVA's delegation trip to Silicon Valley, where around thirty people from industry, startups, investors, academia and the public sector participated, in the presence of The Crown Princess and Prince Daniel, as well as Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Johan Forssell.

The images of man's first steps on the moon in 1969 are among the most iconic in the history of photography. The moment was immortalized with a "Hasselblad", a Swedish technical innovation whose name subsequently became more or less synonymous with the concept of the world's best camera.

Flyg- och rymdtekniska Föreningen och Kungl. Ingenjörsvetenskapsakademien (IVA) tilldelar Ella Carlsson, generaldirektör för Rymdstyrelsen, Ulla Teige-diplomet "Årets kvinnliga förebild inom flyg- och rymdteknik" 2025 för hennes arbete inom svensk rymdteknik.

Nobelpriset i kemi 2024: Vetenskap där AI hjälper till med att lösa ett riktigt biologiskt problem

Nobelpriset i kemi 2024 tilldelas med ena hälften till David Baker, USA ”för datorbaserad proteindesign” och med andra hälften gemensamt till Demis Hassabis och John M. Jumper, Storbritannien ”för proteinstrukturprediktion”. Inte ett svårt val, säger IVA-ledamot Pernilla Wittung-Stafshede, professor och ledamot i Nobelkommittén som utser årets pristagare.

Nobelpriset 2024: Ekonomipriset till forskning om välstånd

Sveriges Riksbanks pris i ekonomisk vetenskap till Alfred Nobels minne går i år till trion Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson och James Robinson för studier av hur institutioner formas och påverkar välstånd. De prisas för sina insikter om hur skillnader i välstånd mellan länder kan uppstå och varför de består. Det är oerhört viktig kunskap menar John Hassler, IVA-ledamot och professor som varit med och utsett årets pristagare.

Avfall från massabruk blir nytt skogsgödsel

Ett cirkulärt skogsbruk där näringsämnen från avverkade träd förs tillbaka till marken. Det är målet för Maria Sandberg vid Karlstad universitet. Av avfall från massa- och pappersbruk utvecklar hon en ny typ av gödsel. Projektet, som var med på IVAs 100-lista 2022, har gått in i en ny industriell testfas.
