Sustainable Farming of Shrimp and Fish in Umeå
Local production of fish and shrimp in Umeå reduces climate emissions and create a resilient food system. Through multitrophic aquaculture, where waste from one species become nutrients for another, a circular resource-efficient system is created
Imported fish and shrimp are associated with high climate emissions. We develop a circular system for local production in Umeå, where multitrophic aquaculture is combined with the reuse of biological residual streams and surplus heat from the Dåva combined heat and power plant. The solution can be used by food producers, energy companies, and municipalities to create climate-smart and resilient food production systems. The concept has the potential to reduce emissions, achieve local self-sufficiency, and create new opportunities for research and innovation. Following pilot-scale trials during 2026, the next step is to scale up the facility. We seek collaboration with industry, municipalities, and food-sector stakeholders.
