About the project

The Values of Forests – Opportunities and Challenges

Project period: 2025–2027

Project Lead: Karin Byman

Chair of the Steering Group: Helene Hellmark Knutsson

Funders: Billerud, Formas, Holmen, the Knowledge Foundation (KK-stiftelsen), SCA, Stockholm Exergi, Sveaskog, Södra Skogsägarna.

Conducted within the framework of the “Swedish Futures” vision project.

Forests are a key resource in the transition to a sustainable society – but they are expected to meet many demands, both now and in the future. Through this project, IVA aims to contribute knowledge and analysis to support political decision-making and strategic choices within industry and other organisations, in Sweden and the EU.

The project examines how forests can be used to increase value creation and promote sustainable development, what trade-offs are required between different objectives, and what consequences different choices may have – both in the short and long term. Taking a holistic perspective and a value chain focus, the role of forests is analysed in relation to climate, the economy, biodiversity, energy supply, and security of supply.

By bringing together research, experience, and societal stakeholders, IVA aims to raise the level of knowledge and contribute to a faster transition towards a more sustainable society.
