The pursuit of green steel

Sweden wants to be the first in the world to produce fossil-free steel on a large scale, revolutionising the iron and steel industry, which today accounts for 7 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. But how well is Sweden placed against the global competition? We asked Anders Werme, Associate Professor of Production Technology with a focus on the mining and steel industry.

Challenges of extracting rare earth elements

Just after New Year, LKAB announced that it has made the largest rare earth discovery in Europe to date. The elements are vital for building batteries, wind turbines and other technology that can enable a rapid transition to a fossil-free society. However, extracting the in-demand elements comes with some major challenges that need to be resolved, according to Jenny Greberg, Vice President Technology at LKAB and a Fellow of IVA.

Roadmap for Metals and Minerals

The green transition means a sharp increase in demand for metals and minerals. Today, a few countries outside Europe control these resources. But Sweden and other countries in the EU have great potential to secure their supply, not least through rich ore deposits. The main question for IVA's project Roadmap for Metals and Minerals is how Sweden and Europe can sustainably secure the supply of metals and minerals.

Vätgasens roll i ett fossilfritt samhälle

Vätgas kan bli en nyckelspelare när samhället ska göras hållbart och när löften om ett fossilfritt energisystem och en klimatsmart industri- och transportsektor ska realiseras. För att vi ska nå dit måste vi dock hantera nya förutsättningar vad gäller tekniska lösningar, ekonomi och styrmedel. IVA vill genom projektet bidra med en oberoende analys och diskussion om vätgasens förutsättningar och möjligheter.

A number of initiatives and projects around the country are examining how resource efficiency and circularity can be introduced in various sectors. But there is no unifying arena where industries and perspectives can meet. A platform is needed for resource efficiency and a circular society where industry, research and policy-makers can work together.
